1985 News clips on Zhao Jian Hua,Yang Yang and Liem Swie King

Morten Frost as BWF commentator on TV

Morten Frost is going to be missed on TV when he joins BAM of Malaysia in January 2015 as coaching director.
Gone will be the sizing up of the players and their strengths and weaknesses that
make each game more entertaining and educational for example :
1) Analysis of Kenichi Tago especially his lack of match fitness. How he
tries to buy time and save energy by diving to the ground for shots and catching a breather after that and making ambitious shots to finish off a rally. How opponents can beat him by just staying with him and keeping him on the court, the very same tactics Frost employed against unfit players like Zhao Jian Hua. The analysis was made in the 2014 GP finals when Chen Long played Tago.
2) Analysis of Hafiz Hashim's achilles heel, poor leg strength and recovery
that can be exploited by making him move to all corners of the court and taking advantage of his poor reach and recovery from lunges.
3) Wang Shi Xian's playing style and how she burns energy with her explosive
playing style and tries to catch her breath in between rallies.
And so on and so forth with too many to mention.
Frost would be a very dangerous singles coach with his experience.
Who knows how long Frost would last in Malaysia given the culture, hopefully longer than Tan Aik Mong. If he chooses to quit his more than US 30K+ per month
job,the badminton world will gain by his return as BWF commentator and giving the English speaking part of the badminton world a shot in the arm.In the meantime we have to turn to the equally good Zhao Jian Hua of the Chinese speaking world to give us insights into the world of badminton tactics.

2014 World Badminton Championships-Jinx for Li and Lee

The 2014 Badminton World Championships turned out to
be disasters for both Lee Chong Wei and Li Xue Rui.
Lee Chong Wei defeated by a player designed to beat him,
just like Ken Norton was designed to beat Muhamad Ali.
The other anti-Lee Chong Wei ie.Du Peng Yu has quit after
the Thomas Cup whilst another one Tian Hou Wei is still
trying to break through with his anti-Lee Chong Wei playing mindset.
It is no wonder that China lost the 2014 Thomas Cup what with
so many anti-Lee Chong Wei clones unable to cope with players
other than Lee Chong Wei such as Kevin Cordon,Kenichi Tago or
Kento Momota.Hopefully in future China will produce more talented
players who are more versatile rather than the one dimension players
bent on outlasting Lee Chong Wei and relying on merely speed and
fitness to beat others.
In Men's singles, it is Deja Vu, with the No.1 player over-exposed to
too many tournaments whilst the winner lost just about every
tournament but peaked just for the Worlds. Just like past legends like
Taufik,Lin Dan,Yang Yang and Zhao Jian Hua, excelling in the big
tournaments.
The Women's singles had a double tragedy in Li Xue Rue, easily the
most powerful and sharp women's singles player but who could not
learn from past mistakes from losing to Ratchanok in 2013.She lost to
a Spaniard who was more an athlete than badminton player, something
like a Susi Susanti. It is obvious that the 3 top China players have
weaknesses such as unable to play well over 3 sets, unable to manage
their energy over 3 games and spending too much energy in their hard,
fast explosive playing with little reward, and unable to sustain fast, long
rallies. It was almost like watching again Susi Susanti beating Ye Zhao
Ying.
In the case of Li Xue Rui given the competition such as Marin,
Ratchanok and Sindhu she has to add more dimensions to her game
such as fitness, recovery from fast furious rallies, patience and cutting
down on errors and a more economical style of stroke making such as
that extolled by Li Mao in order to be able to cope with different types
of opponents. It was obvious that Li Xue Rui under-estimated her
opponent and from her pale appearance in the 3rd set she was winded,
suffering from fatigue and making unforced errors. Hopefully she will
add more weapons to her arsenal and become a true champion and not
a one hit wonder.
Ratchanok, Sindhu and Marin are athletes capable of outlasting the top
Chinese girls over 3 sets with their more economical styles of play, as
seen by the endless energy of the Spaniard wielding a turbo charged
and energy saving Nanoray Z Speed.Lets hope the China girls know how
to manage their energy and that like cars speed can be varied by changing
gears and using the right gear at the right moment.
Lets hope that all the anti-Lee Chong Wei clones and Lee Chong Wei
will soon disappear from the scene so that we will have more exciting
badminton less dependent on physical fitness.Hopefully Li Xue Rui will
learn more from Chen Long or Sun Jun to boost her patience and fitness.
I have a feeling that the proposed new scoring system will turn
badminton into a more exciting game.
Aspire to be world no.1,Olympic Champion and World Champion
all at the same time in this day and age? Well it wont happen because
if you dont pick and choose and peak for selected tournaments you will
end up the walking wounded and an emotional mess. And in the big ones
opponents will be studying you and making you their main target.

Saina Nehwal's call to limit participation of China players in women's singles tournaments

http://www.thestar.com.my/Sport/Badminton/2014/08/28/Unhappy-Xuerui-teaches-Saina-a-lesson-with-thumping-victory/

Taken in the wrong context, this suggestion will
reflect badly on Saina as it may appear that she is
like backward people demanding affirmative action.
What she is really referring to are several occasions in the
past when she had too many China competitors to play against
and some gained a distinct advantage in further rounds when they
received walkovers from teammates which allowed them to conserve
energy for later rounds when they played against other opponents.
It is not cheating but clearly a case of bullying other competitors by
ganging up against them.
The solution should be changing the scoring format so that the game
would not be so emphatic on physical fitness and more on skill and
strategy. Also players should not be forced to participate in
tournaments by the BWF forcing them to escape playing when they
dont really want to play because they want to avoid injury.
China is not really that dominant in women's singles when
all they have are really three top players. The lesser players however
can do damage to opponents  by giving walkovers to teammates or
tiring out opponents.
As it is China is already giving some tournaments a miss like in Table
Tennis and in the process giving opportunities to other players to
win more prize money and encouraging them to take up the sport.
What is not needed is the BWF forcing players to participate in
tournaments against their will.China players should also realise that
ganging up against other players is destructive and selfish and is
tantamount to shooting its own feet and Li Yong Bo should educate
them against giving a perception of being bullies and pack wolves but
instead insist more on fair play in order to promote their own sport.
As far as badminton is concerned, China should shed its ugly American
image and produce great players like Lee Chong Wei or Lin Dan or
Li Xue Rui instead of a band of little monkeys trying to bring down
giants by ganging up and softening them up first.China should concentrate
on its tradition of producing noble and outstanding people capable of
greatness instead of little people like the cheats found in other countries
in cycling, football, formula 1 or athletics who would do anything to win.

The impact on world badminton if Japan lifts the 2014 Thomas Cup

I am not a fanatic who supports badminton by nation
but I really believe that if Japan wins the Thomas Cup for the
first time,it will change entirely the scenario of world badminton.
When Japan beat China, they showed the world how to play badminton
with their positive, skillful samurai attacking badminton,as opposed to the
negative safe badminton played by China.Think what badminton would
become if China's negative defensive badminton had prevailed.
As it is the fact the 4 countries in the last 4 of the Uber Cup are :
1) China-world's 2nd largest economy and highest population
2) Japan-world's 3rd largest economy and a high tech nation
3) India- world no.2 in terms of population and a growing economy
4) Korea- A high tech economy.
Not only that the 4 nations are all ancient civilisations who have made their
mark and paved the way in human civilisation and their combined
population and economies form a substantial part of the world.
The fact that Japan and India are making their presence felt will
push China to do better and will make badminton even more popular there
and worldwide.
If the Thomas Cup is won by a little mouse of a nation,it will not do much
good for badminton as a whole as it will only benefit a small group of
people and in the long run the more numerous parasites feeding off them.
That is not to say that either nation must win,may the better team win as it
is good for worldwide promotion and in the long term the winner ought to
be one who can give the sport a shot in the arm worldwide.
Japan is very focused in winning this time, the fact that the men's team did
not even turn up to support their women in the Uber Final as they must have channeled their energies to the Final.Expect the Japanese to fight like
devils and demons in the final, and to a lesser extent Malaysians playing for personal glory and the extra cash rewards, which will corrupt their spirit
and morale in future campaigns with their greed.
The noble of Malaysia do not mind feeding the poor and needy in this full employment country, they simply resent to being tricked into fattening the
already rich fat cats and corrupt.

Malaysia to have Badminton League in 2014

http://www.thestar.com.my/Sport/Badminton/2014/04/29/Malaysian-badminton-entering-the-big-leagues/

Goh Soon Huat claims 4th Singles Spot in Malaysia's 2014 Thomas Cup Team on merit.

http://www.thestar.com.my/Sport/Badminton/2014/04/29/Soon-Huat-claims-Thomas-Cup-spot-with-Ramdan-victory/

Once in a blue moon Malaysia practises

meritocracy in its policies,only perhaps

for a trivial event like badminton, but never

for strategic events.

http://www.thestar.com.my/Sport/Badminton/2014/05/03/Thomas-Cup-Its-Soon-Huat/

A very rare occasion in Malaysia when decisions are based objectively and

rationally, instead of the normal deluge of biased and balls-carrying

innuendo.Goh is a BAM player,Ramdan is not in the BAM, the reason why

players leave the BAM is because the BAM has no money to invest in

players playing in tournaments like in other countries, as public funds are

diverted to line the pockets of the hangers-on supporting the ruling

government.Goh also won on form and merit, and if he had been left out,

it just reflects how idiotic the BAM can be by not supporting their own

player who has won his place on merit. It could have been a double

tragedy.

Lee Chong Wei makes known his "choice"for Thomas Cup

http://www.themalaymailonline.com/sports/article/chong-wei-ramdan-misbun-best-choice-to-fill-vacant-single-slot

Why not ask Lee Chong Wei to be the chief coach.
If his godfather cum benefactor's son is the best choice, why bother
at all to conduct trials to select the in-form player?
Just ask Lee Chong Wei to make the selection.

Chen Jin becomes head coach of China's women singles badminton

http://sports.sina.com.cn/o/2014-01-05/06406966335.shtml

Zhang Ning becomes assistant head coach.
Apparently after the annual review of the Coaching Committee
(COMMITTEE not Li Yong Bo) on the coaches performance or
KPI , it decided that Chen Jin can perform better than Zhang Ning
as Head.
Chen Jin was impressive in the last few months coaching Li Xue Rui
and Wang Shi Xian and showed a lot of energy and enthusiasm as
opposed to Zhang's nonchalant style.
There is hope that the Gold Boss will inject a breath of fresh air and
bring China's power in Ladies Singles back to its high point.Probably
Gold Boss is capable of making the ladies play more like men.
